How Ukrainian Verb Conjugation Works
Ukrainian verbs belong to one of two conjugation classes determined by their present-tense endings. Like Russian, Ukrainian features a verbal aspect system where nearly every verb exists as an imperfective/perfective pair.
- Imperfective (недоконаний вид) — describes ongoing, habitual, or repeated actions
- Perfective (доконаний вид) — describes completed, one-time actions with a definite result
The past tense in Ukrainian agrees with the subject's gender (masculine, feminine, neuter) and number (singular/plural), not with person. The future tense of imperfective verbs uses буду + infinitive, while perfective verbs use their conjugated present-tense forms for the future. Ukrainian also has three imperative forms: ти (informal singular), ми (let's), and ви (formal/plural).
