Grammar Notes

Relational Prefix /y(e)-/

The prefix yə- creates a genitive (“of”) relationship between two nouns:

AmharicEnglish
yə-ityoPiya kətəmaa city of Ethiopia
yə-ıne betmy house
yə-Kebede mekinaKebede’s car
yə-amarıñña məsahıfan Amharic book

The Verb Infinitive

The infinitive is formed by adding the prefix mə- to the verb stem:

Verb stemInfinitiveMeaning
hed-məhedto go
meTT-məmTatto come
bəll-məblatto eat
Saf-məSafto write
anbəb-mənbabto read
səm-məsmatto hear
mar-məmarto learn

The infinitive is used after verbs like fəlləgə (want): məhed ıfəlligallehu (I want to go).

The Verb Imperfective

The imperfective expresses ongoing, habitual, or future actions. It is formed with a prefix and sometimes a suffix:

PersonPrefix/Suffixhedə (go)
1sgı- … -allehuıhedallehu
2sg masc.tı- … -allehutıhedalləh
2sg fem.tı- … -alleštıhedalləš

Verb Classification

Amharic verbs are classified by the number of root consonants (radicals):

  • Three-radical verbs: most common (e.g., s-b-r → səbbərə “he broke”)
  • Two-radical verbs: shorter stems (e.g., s-m → səmma “he heard”, b-l → bəlla “he ate”)
