Cultural Notes
Ethiopia’s Place in World History
Ethiopia holds a singular position in African history. The Aksumite Empire (c. 100–940 CE) was one of the great civilizations of the ancient world, trading with Rome, Persia, and India. It was among the first states to adopt Christianity as an official religion (4th century CE). The Zagwe dynasty built the famous rock-hewn churches of Lalibela in the 12th–13th centuries. Ethiopia’s successful resistance to European colonization — particularly the victory at the Battle of Adwa in 1896 under Emperor Menelik II — made it a symbol of African independence. The Ethiopian calendar (/yə-ityoTya Kən mäwočč/) is seven to eight years behind the Gregorian calendar, and the country celebrates its New Year (/inquTaTaš/) on September 11 (or 12 in a leap year). This deep historical continuity is a source of immense national pride.
