Cultural Notes
Education in Ethiopia
Ethiopia’s modern education system dates to the early 20th century, when Emperor Menelik II established the first Western-style schools. Today the system follows an 8-4 structure: eight years of primary school and four years of secondary school. Addis Ababa University, founded in 1950, is the oldest and most prestigious university in the country. Education is highly valued in Ethiopian society, and families often make significant sacrifices to ensure their children can attend school. The phrase /yə-timhirt bet lijočč/ (school children) carries a sense of community pride throughout the country.
