Cultural Notes
The Importance of /bet/
The word /bet/ (ቤት — house) is one of the most productive words in Amharic. It combines with other nouns to form compound words for many types of buildings and institutions:
| Compound | Meaning |
|---|---|
| bet (ቤት) | house |
| meTShaf bet | library (book house) |
| meblabiya bet | restaurant (eating house) |
| Tena Tabiya bet | clinic (health station house) |
| timhirt bet | school (education house) |
| bunna bet | café (coffee house) |
| genzeb bet | bank (money house) |
This pattern of compounding with /bet/ is extremely common in Amharic and reflects the language’s preference for transparent, descriptive compound words over borrowed terminology.
