This final unit of Volume 1 introduces the emphatic suffix /-a/, which is added to verbs, nouns, and other elements to give emphasis, insistence, or emotional coloring to a statement. Mastering this suffix will make your Amharic sound more natural and expressive. The unit also serves as a consolidation of the entire spoken Amharic course.

Grammar Notes

The Emphatic Suffix /-a/

The suffix /-a/ attaches to the end of a word to add emphasis. It does not change the grammatical function of the word but intensifies its meaning or adds emotional force.

/-a/ with Verbs

When /-a/ attaches to a verb, it emphasizes the certainty or insistence of the action:

/-a/ with Pronouns and Nouns

When /-a/ attaches to a pronoun or noun, it conveys “even” or “also” with emphasis:

/-a/ with Question Words (Universal Negation)

When /-a/ attaches to question words in negative sentences, it creates universal negation — “no one,” “nothing,” “nowhere”:
