How Albanian Verb Conjugation Works
Standard Albanian (Tosk) verbs conjugate for person and number. There is no infinitive like in Romance languages; dictionaries often cite the 1st person singular present (e.g. flas “I speak”) or use të + present subjunctive for citation.
Key patterns:
- Present perfect — kam / ke / ka … + past participle (e.g. kam parë “I have seen”).
- Past definite (aorist) — completed past events, common in narrative speech and writing.
- Imperfect — ongoing, repeated, or background past (similar to English “used to” or “was …-ing”).
- Future — typically do të + present subjunctive stem.
- Subjunctive — after të, in purpose clauses, and after many verbs of wanting, needing, or ordering.
- Regular verbs in -oj (e.g. punoj) add endings to a stable stem; many core verbs are irregular.
